Time is right for competitors to Eurostar says Getlink
Getlink, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, expressed optimism about the future of international trains at an All-Party Parliamentary Rail Group (APPRG) at the House of Commons on 19th November. Getlink’s CEO Yann Leriche said there was room to expand services through the tunnel now that the complexities of track access to new entrants had been reduced.
There is demand for services to more European cities such as Cologne and Marseille and there is serious interest from the private sector to run more passenger services through the tunnel.
The presence of t wo of these, Virigin Trains and Evolyn, at the APPRG appeared to confirm this with Virgin affirming that there is room for growth without “cannibalising” the existing Eurostar services. They also made clear that facilities such as access to the maintenance depot at Temple Mills currently leased to Eurostar, would have to be accessible to them as well.
Ashford’s MP Sojan Joseph raised with them the issue of stopping at Kent stations such as Ashford.
