BBET responds to Eurostar’s complaint about St Pancras
Bring Back Euro Trains has pushed back at comments by Gwendoline Cazenave about the lack of space at St Pancras Station. In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Eurostar’s CEO complained that too little was being done at St Pancras to prepare for the big increases in passenger numbers which they expect to handle in the coming years.
In his rebuttal on Linked In, our own Diccon Spain points out that an easy and immediate solution to overcrowding at St Pancras lies before Eurostar: re-open the disused stations of Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International.
Le Monde explains that discussions are ongoing to build more capacity at Paris Gare du Nord but not, laments Mme Cazenave, at St Pancras (no mention of Bruxelles Midi or Rotterdam, the other Eurostar termini).
To support their claim, Eurostar have publicised an report extolling the economic benefits of international rail to the UK.
BBET has been calling for international rail to be included in the forthcoming Rail Bill. The Government would do well to take note of Eurostar’s growth figures because they are likely to be an underestimate.
