Hope of local trains to and from Calais
Calais-Fréthun has this in common with Ashford and Ebbsfleet: it was removed as a Eurostar stop during the pandemic and never reinstated. In this article published in Kent and Surrey Bylines, Charlotte Mbali describes a trip across the Channel to meet people on the French side who are affected by this.
Campaigners in Calais want SNCF to run local trains with more stops down the Côte d’Opale instead of the current fast TGVs, and to repurpose the TGV trains to run through the Channel Tunnel to Ashford. They also want to promote Calais as a tourist and shopping destination, an end in itself.
