Cross-border train services need to improve says Italian Railway boss
The head of the Italian FS Group, Stefano Donnarumma, has spoken out in the Financial Times to deplore the lack of cross-border train connectivity on the European continent.
In a (probably unconscious) echo of last year’s Greenpeace analysis of city-to-city rail routes, Donnarumma complained that European countries have prioritised the development of their domestic routes to the detriment of international ones. Thus he is calling on train operators to coordinate their efforts to provide fast connections between the continent’s biggest cities, including sharing depots and staff.
FS Group hope to jump ahead of competitors in the cross-Channel market by using high-speed ETR1000 trains that it has ordered from Hitachi.
He also supports France’s ban on short-haul flights where a rail journey of two and a half hours is available.
