Channel-Tunnel trains present and future
Train commentator Jon Worth gives us a comprehensive description of the current state of passenger trains through the Channel Tunnel. He also examines in detail the different claims for expansion, whether for Eurostar or for its future competitors. He measures these claims and plans against the real obstacles in the way of expansion. These are track and station capacity, existing and planned rolling stock, international regulations, and the border checks mandated by the international parties.
Following BBET’s advice and re-opening Ashford and Ebbsfleet stations for international passengers would alleviate one of the problems. These stations already have border check facilities, which could also fairly easily be added to Stratford. These three stations could reduce the congestion at London St Pancras and deal with that aspect of the capacity problem.
