Ashford International terminal reopens – for French election!

French voters living in the Ashford area were briefly allowed to enter the international terminal at Ashford station in order to vote in yesterday’s European elections.
The French consulate regularly hires venues throughout the UK at election time in order to save their nationals a trip to London when voting in person. In recent years, Ashford School and The Coachworks have played host to “le scrutin”, the vote. And yesterday was the turn of Ashford’s international terminal.
It was the first time many local French had seen inside the terminal for four years. The baggage security machines and passport booths had been removed and the seating in the waiting area chained off. Large cut-outs of Disney characters were tidied away against a wall.
The consulate rightly chooses Ashford for their voters living in the south east of England, because of its central location and excellent transport links. We hope Eurostar (and its future competitors) take note of this view and of Ashford’s status as a transport hub. We look forward to the reopening of the international terminal to cross-Channel passengers in the near future.
UPDATE: And we hear they’ll be back very soon for the summer elections, 2024.
